Meet tattoo artist and owner of East Coast Social Club, Ariel, as she discusses what drew her to tattooing and why she turned to Venue.
What do you get when you combine a love of UFC, Fast & Furious movies, and hip hop culture with cutie-pie Sanrio, Kewpies, and anime characters? You get an Arielisgood tattoo. After Ariel graduated from business school, she became infatuated with tattooing and realized there was a hole in the industry that she wanted to fill. Tattooing, like any art form, can feel a bit elitist and exclusionary to those just starting to dip their toes in and Ariel sought to make tattoos feel more accessible to clients looking for delicate ways to decorate their vessel.
After an apprenticeship and residencies at several different shops across NYC, Ariel used her business degree to open East Coast Social Club, located in East Williamsburg. Now she gets to be the boss and over the last two and a half years has created a dreamy artist’s playground complete with salon chairs upstairs, a podcasting studio in the basement, and a backyard, perfect for a summer kickback. The space reflects her personality and tattoo aesthetics beyond measure–bright, clean, colorful and adorable. But it’s not all cutesy! Ariel loves art in all forms and wants to create tattoos that subvert expectations, think Hello Kitty with a face tat or a Kewpie baby decked out in barbed wire and skulls.
As the owner of ECSC, Ariel is focused on community. She’s got several resident artists and is constantly opening her space to guests from around the world. Message her through instagram if you would like to tattoo in Brookly with East Coast Social Club.
Beyond tattooing, Ariel is planning events, designing and manufacturing her own toys, creating sculptures and traveling. With so many irons in the fire, Ariel turned to Venue last year for help streamlining her booking process. She told us about her frustrations with scheduling, which used to take several days of back and forth across emails and DMs, and required an assistant. Today, she’s able to schedule herself wherever in the world she decides to be. Not only has Venue helped her admin work become a breeze, she’s also gotten great feedback from her clients who marvel at how easy booking and paying for their tattoos has become.
Keep an eye on Ariel and East Coast Social Club as they continue to grow in tandem. We can’t wait to see what she comes up with next (hint hint) and Venue will be there each step of the way to deal with the boring parts so that she can focus on the creation and nurturing of her community and her flawless tattoos.
